The Boston-based producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Flawed Mangoes (Evan lo) reached a global audience in 2023 with his ‘Killswitch Lullaby’. The track, consisting of nostalgic, hazy and atmospheric guitar loops, went viral on TikTok, where it became the sound of the ‘Hopecore’ aesthetic. That social media trend is characterized by positive and heartwarming content, with the goal of inspiring optimism and hope.
In the meantime, Flawed Mangoes has a dazzling internet following: more than 600 million streams worldwide, 1.6 million followers on TikTok and 480 thousand on Instagram. His music gathered more than 200 million streams on Spotify. In addition, he regularly collaborates with Sombr, who sampled his music for “Would've Been You”. Ook Skepta, Royal & the Serpent and Øneheart have already called upon the unique sound of Flawed Mangoes.
With his music, Flawed Mangoes moves between ambient and post-rock with excursions into heavy shoegaze, math rock and even prog, a sound that builds further on the #hopecore of his first successes. He himself mentions Battles and Boards of Canada among others as important sources of inspiration. He makes his guitar loops on his self-modified Fender Telecaster, which allows him to push the boundaries of guitar music.
After a sold-out American tour, Flawed Mangoes is crossing the ocean for the first time. In addition to passages at Pitchfork Festival in Paris and London, he brings his band to Cactus Café.
