‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’, ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’,‘Where Is The Love’,‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’, ‘Ballad Of The Sad Young Men’ ... Song titles that ring a bell for everyone, and we owe that to the American soul diva Roberta Flack, who became a world star with her unique soft voice and emotional interpretations of her repertoire. She played beautiful piano and developed her own style between soul, jazz, R&B, and pop. Flack’s career had its peak in the 70s, but she continued to perform until she became ill in 2022, and eventually passed away in February 2025. Voor de Zuid-African/Belgian singer Tutu Puoane, Roberta Flack was a childhood heroine, and a shining example of how a black artist could build a successful career in an honest, sensitive, and musical way. Perhaps no coincidence that Tutu’s own voice and musical approach are regularly compared to that of Flack. After numerous musical wanderings between her own music and collaborations with, among others, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, after her Wrapped In Rhythm double album project and recently ten full Lotto Arena’s with Bart Peeters, Tutu brings an homage to Roberta Flack in her own unique way, with a group of experienced top musicians with whom she has meanwhile developed a telepathic relationship. Think of the spontaneity and energy of her Joni Mitchell Project, now translated to Roberta’s well-known and lesser-known songs - always soulful, always intense.
