Roeselare choir: Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms

Het Roeselaars Kamerkoor brings intense choral music from quiet Renaissance to hypnotic modern sound. In surprising concert experiences with atmosphere, light, and strong collaborations. The chamber choir has a broad and varied repertoire, ranging from Renaissance music to contemporary music. For this concert, they are bringing the Deutsches Requiem by the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) in the version for 4-hand piano, a soprano and baritone solo, and mixed choir. Brahms is sometimes called the last great romantic. He was fond of Bach and Beethoven and was called "the guardian of classical music." Yet, in his time, people sometimes had difficulty with his music. Brahms had been walking around for years with the plan to write a requiem for humanity. He did not want a requiem for the dead, but as comfort for the living survivors. Actually, Brahms had wanted to call the work A Human Requiem. The choral work is full of reflections on the mortality of man and on the hope for a better life in the afterlife. Both in terms of text and music, the work is somber and subdued. Brahms completed the work when he was 35 years old. Far beyond Roeselare and West-Vlaanderen, the Roeselaars Kamerkoor has received recognition for its excellent musical performances. It was awarded by the city council of Roeselare as Cultureel Ambassadeur Roeselare 2016-2018. The choir brings together talented singers from Roeselare and a wide region around it.
