The Mission

Overwhelming historical drama with religious and political accents, about the human trafficking thriving in the eighteenth-century South American jungle. The local Orde der Jezuïeten tries to convert the local population in order to protect them from the impending slavery. Powerful and atmospheric, The Mission is a magnificently filmed (Oscar winner and Gouden Palm Cannes) and outspokenly political take on the conflict between church, state, and capitalism. The film acquires a subtle depth thanks to the excellent music by Ennio Morricone.
