Autumn among the reeds!

On an excursion to the Matjens/Maatjes, a nature reserve on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands. About 50 ha is in the Netherlands and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer (SBB), more than 10 ha is in Belgium and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest. We are going out with nature guide Kris Ribbens. A large part is reed land. There are also groves and hay meadows in the area. Especially in winter, part of the hay meadows is underwater. This attracts many birds. Various species of geese and waders look for food there. We can also encounter various reed-bound birds. It is a Natura2000 area as a European bird directive area. In 2024, extensive work was carried out, especially on the Flemish side, to restore wet nature. Due to the management, plant species that like poorer conditions are increasing. In the water of some watercourses, plant species occur that can grow here thanks to emerging seepage water. We will also see traces of peat extraction in the past in this region.
