April 1945. Twelve-year-old Nanning lives on the idyllic Duitse Waddeneiland Amrum. He hunts seals, fishes, and helps on a farm. Life seems beautiful and peaceful, but in Berlin, the Derde Rijk is in decay. Ook Nannings life slowly begins to feel more complex than it ever was. Great scarcity prevails on the remote island in the final weeks of the war. When peace finally arrives, Nanning is confronted with his parents' Nazi beliefs.
Without much frills and with a sober visual style, Amrum 1945 asks the pertinent question of whether youth has a chance at an innocent future in a place where the swastika flag still proudly flutters. Despite being set in WWII, the film clearly also relates to our current times. By the way, for child actor Jasper Billerbeck it is his debut role, and he immediately makes an indelible impression. "The austere ‘Amrum, 1945’ makes the horror of war palpable: not with tanks or machine guns, but with small, gruesome tableaux." - ★★★½ - Humo
