▲ RENETTE DÉSIR & DON KAPOT
Considered one of the most captivating and authentic voices of the contemporary Haitian music scene, Renette Désir was born in Port-au-Prince, where she developed an early passion for the music of her country, a product of a blending of Taino heritage, African traditions, Caribbean, and European influences. She grew up to the rhythms of voodoo music which runs through emblematic repertoires of Haiti such as konpas, meringue, rara, and misik rasin.
In 2025, she fled her country and arrived in Brussels. It is there that she met the Belgian free jazz, afrobeat, and krautpunk trio Don Kapot*, with whom she develops a singular musical universe. Beyond a simple artistic collaboration, the album "Nou Pran Bal" ("We took gunfire") tells a story of displacement, rupture, survival, and reinvention.
* Giotis Damianidis (bass and guitar), Viktor Perdieus (saxophones and various instruments) and Joao Lobo (drums)
