Mare Madre is a poetic performance about the intense bond between a mother and her son, about missing and finding each other again, about drifting away and washing ashore.
A boy walks along the surf and collects artifacts from the North Sea. Ever since his childhood he has been a beachcomber, mesmerized by everything the sea coughs up and swallows. The sea reveals to him a treasure chest full of relics; a punctured lifebuoy, seeds from other continents, a sperm whale that urgently needs to be kept alive.
A mother walks along the surf and collects memories of her son. Ever since his childhood it has been clear that he thinks differently and lives differently. Will she be able to let him go into the wide world? Will he be able to let her go?
With Met Marijke Pinoy and her son Titus De Sutter Pinoy on stage, that story acquires a special vulnerability. The encounter between an experienced actress and a performer without a classical stage background gives extra relief to the story of a mother and her son who are each learning to let go in their own way.
Tom Goossens directs, Marijke Libert & Fred Libert write, Stephan Vanfleteren designs the scenography. Together, inspired by Aäron Fabrice de Kisangani, they bring a performance that aims to be as austere as it is rich in imagery.
