Het Zwin belongs to the best wader areas of Belgium. Many waders commute between the African wintering grounds and the northern breeding grounds and come to 'refuel' before they continue their migration. Since the expansion of the Zwin in 2019, mudflats and salt marshes have an even greater appeal to these birds.
But what exactly are waders? And what is that 'refuelling'? We go in search of as many as ten species that currently reside in the Zwin. There are remarkable birds among them such as the common greenshank. You definitely must have seen that one!
