The Clouds - Contemporary Adaptation after Aristophanes

“De Wolken” is a comedy that was first performed 2500 years ago, but is still just as recognizable as it was then. Because who actually decided that parents are always right? Is it possible that young thinkers might know better after all? With a group of young theater and philosophy enthusiasts, we performed this play for the first time in Ghent in April 2026. Now we are touring to Antwerp! In the 5th century BC, philosophers suddenly began to appear in Athens for the first time, bothering poor passers-by with difficult questions. At the head was the one and only Socrates, who was so philosophical that he never put on shoes before leaving the house. According to some, that man even claimed that there were no gods at all. Aristophanes, the earliest comedian we know, thought that was just a bunch of weirdos, so he decided to write a play to have a good laugh at that new generation of thinkers. That play is now being performed once again 2,449 years later in Nova, and it has lost none of its original luster. Because the eternal clash of generations still prevails, the question still remains as to who is actually right: the old folks with all their years of experience, or the youngsters, with their new, strange view of the world. Is healthy common sense too narrow-minded to be able to grasp reality, or is it precisely urban pseudo-intellectualism that questions everything too much. Do both sides have a point, or is everyone just as wrong?
