John Dowland meets Armenian mourning music in this love letter to melancholy
You have to dare it: composer Vladimir Gorlinsky got to work with John Dowlands ‘Lachrimae’ and wove the Elizabethan pearl with Armenian traditional music. Result: an enchanting amalgam in which lute, duduk, and electronics meet. The stories come from conversations with residents of residential care centers and get a voice in new texts by Fleur Pierets and Sufi poetry. Melancholy as a space for reflection: a performance that does not ward off the darkness, but approaches it as a lover.
