300 years after the first performance, this masterpiece still sounds just as grand with a fantastic cast: Dagmara Dobrowolska, Herlinde Van de Straete, Jan Van Elsacker, Lucas Cortoos, Leander Carlier, Michiel Haspeslagh with Euterpe Barok Consort and Clari Cantuli children's choir with the Carmina Kamerkoor.
De Matteuspassie, the passion story of Jezus van Nazareth, is written for a double 4-part choir each with its own orchestra. The piece requires 6 soloists who take on the roles of narrator, Jesus, Peter, Pilate, and bystanders, etc., and provide commentary in arias.
The two singing choirs enter into dialogue or conflict with each other depending on the storyline and the role they fulfill in the story. The double ensemble provides grandiose music that remains just as impressive after 300 years.
