Funerary heritage
The cemetery of Schurhoven is one of the oldest cemeteries in Limburg. It originated around 1850 by the Saint James Church and grew over the years into a special heritage site.
Between the old trees and stately avenues you discover grave monuments in various styles: from simple cast-iron crosses to impressive, richly decorated gravestones. They reflect the social differences and the funerary art of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
The graves also tell the story of famous inhabitants of Tongeren who left their mark on the city. For example, you will find the final resting place of Aline Pieters, better known as Miss Kodak, who captured life in Sint-Truiden as a photographer. During the world wars she dedicated herself to the Rode Kruis and the resistance.
Discover the story of Aline and other prominent figures during this special heritage walk and get acquainted with a surprising piece of the city's history.
