‘ReinAard is a small miracle: tightly on the track of “Willem die Madocke maecte”, but also completely Lanoye.’ That is what Frits van Oostrom, renowned Reynaert expert, wrote in his glowing review in de Volkskrant. He added: ‘It is to be hoped that the author will bring his text to the stage himself.’
That wish is being granted.
From the autumn of 2026 onwards, gifted performer Tom Lanoye tours with ReinAard — the solo, an evening-long verbal tour de force based on ReinAard, his bestseller and own vision of the fox. Balancing between the sublime and the banal, the witty and the cruel, roaring Dutch and low-down Nether-English, but always swinging like the dickens. He needs nothing more than his voice, a bottle of water, and a microphone for that.
That makes ReinAard — the solo a unique experience: a writer who measures himself against ancient characters and the contemporary words he invented for them. A literary bird's-eye view with a ruthless fox as the main character, ‘a superior rogue, whose centuries-old tricks astonishingly illustrate how populism works’, according to Humo. Or: how the lie still rules, albeit thanks to tasty verses and cunning curses. They were awarded both the Gerrit Komrij prize and a Humo’s Pop Poll medal (‘Best book of 2025’).
