The play takes place during the Tweede Wereldoorlog in a small Hungarian village. De Tóts receive a visit from the disturbed but powerful major of their son, who is serving at the front. The major is traumatized by the war and makes increasingly strange demands: he wants to work at night, makes the family fold cardboard boxes endlessly, and monitors their behavior in a paranoid way. De Tóts do everything to keep him satisfied, out of fear that their son will otherwise be in danger at the front. As the situation becomes more absurd, they increasingly lose their boundaries. Eventually, the tension escalates and leads to a violent, tragic-ironic end.
