The Other Film - In a Low Voice

Lilia, a young engineer, flies with her "flatmate" from Paris, where she lives and works, to her hometown of Sousse to say goodbye to her deceased uncle. She returns to her childhood home where three generations of women live together. Her friend stays in a hotel. From the very beginning, she thus keeps her two lives separate. Because there is a haze of mystery surrounding her uncle's death, Lilia sets out to investigate. Gradually she discovers more about uncle Daly's hidden life. At the same time, she realizes that the reasons why she left Tunisia: the insularity, the conservative ideas, the strict patriarchy have not yet changed. "À Voix Basse" is an intimate, thoughtful portrait of a young woman with a double life and a mission, but gradually evolves into a broader story in which the power relations within society become clear. A strong film due to the impressive cinematography, which perfectly translates the claustrophobia of the house and its inhabitants in a play of light and color. And applause for the delightful acting of the female cast, which provides a credible and layered picture of different generations within the same family. Highly recommended!
