April 1945. On the remote German Wadden island of Amrum, scarcity prevails in all areas during the last weeks of the war. Nanning, twelve years old, must do everything in his power as the 'man of the house' to provide food for his younger brother and sister, his pregnant mother, and his aunt. Despite all the hardships, life on the windy island feels almost like paradise. When peace finally arrives, Nanning struggles with the Nazi beliefs of his parents and the opponents thereof on the island. Do not expect massive battles with tanks; the film shows the horror of Nazism and the downfall of the Derde Rijk through small, poignant details and everyday events. The screenplay is based on the childhood memories of the now-deceased German filmmaker Hark Bohm, who grew up on the island and previously made the award-winning Aus Dem Nichts with director Fatih Akin.
