Sunday service: Downtown Boys (vs) + C'est Qui? (nl) + TBA + TBA

4AD's heavenly punk matinee on Sunday, December 6, from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM. TIMING: 1:30 PM: doors 2:00 PM: first band 3:00 PM: C’est Qui? 4:30 PM: third band 6:00 PM: Downtown Boys 7:00 PM: end Timing subject to change, bands may still swap spots. Downtown Boys (vs) American politically charged punk rock. Downtown Boys have pushed forward incessantly as both an artistic and political project since their inception. Zangeres Victoria Marie and guitarist/singer Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met during union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, Rhode Island. Many of the band's early songs were about union organizing and exploitative working conditions. The five-piece band is further formed by Joe DeGeorge (saxophone/synthesizer), Mary Jane Regalado (bass), and Joey Doubek (drums). After years of intensive touring and three acclaimed albums – including ‘Full Communism’ (2015) and ‘Cost of Living’, their 2017 debut on Sub Pop – Downtown Boys have continued to grow as artists, musicians, and organizers. With the new record ‘Public Luxury’, the band now presents a captivating album that emphatically keeps politics front and center, while at the same time showcasing their most urgent and powerful sound to date. The meaning of ‘Public Luxury’ is closely tied to that of the title of their second album, ‘Full Communism’. Simply put, Public Luxury means: "everything for everyone." It is the stubborn belief that a better world is possible, while fully acknowledging the horrors we see every day. At the same time, it emphasizes individual and collective responsibility to resist the nihilism and hopelessness we all feel. ‘Public Luxury’ was co-produced by Joey La Neve DeFrancesco, alongside sound engineer and longtime supporter of Downtown Boys Seth Manchester (Lambrini Girls, Lightning Bolt, Model/Actriz), at Machines With Magnets, a recording studio and arts center in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. C’est Qui? (nl) Utrecht garage punks shoot with sharp aim and throw all bastards out of the pit. A band where it feels dangerous as of old, as if anything can happen, and where they are primarily going to decide about that. The raw punk energy of C’est Qui? immediately convinced us during their tight Best Kept Secret set; this is a band born to be in our club. Deze Utrechtse gang has not existed long, but their live shows are already nothing short of legendary. They play straightforward, at a speed where The Ramones don't even have time to shout 1-2-3-4, and with an attitude second to none. Zangeres Jazzebelle screams every sentence as if it's the last chance to get her political message across. The musicians explore all corners and sides of the stage. And above all: rock-solid songs with meaning.
