Interlinie #3 Double bill: Mother Tongue + As Yet Untitled by Bex Burch

Interline: Mother Tongue and Bex Burch/Esther Coorevits/Stan Maris/James McClure Interline brings musicians from improvisation and experimental music together in an adventurous program that tours along various Belgian and Dutch stages. Through encounters between diverse musical practices, Interline wants to stimulate new artistic work and build sustainable collaborations. In 2026, Rataplan, Space is the Place and Sound in Motion are organizing an evening with a double bill: the trio Mother Tongue and As Yet Untitled van Bex Burch together with Esther Coorevits, Stan Maris and James McClure. The project As Yet Untitled is the result of an international residency of the Berlin percussionist, composer and instrument builder Bex Burch. As Yet Untitled Tijdens her residency for Interline #3, Bex Burch is working on her composition As Yet Untitled. Gathering around her are trumpeter James McClure (NL/ZA), violinist Esther Coorevits (BE, former Artist in Residence at Rataplan) and accordionist Stan Maris (BE, Kin Gajo). Together they give shape to Bex's work from their own musical practice, creating unique musical encounters that reach further than one moment or one place. As Yet Untitled is located between structure and improvisation, repetition and disturbance. The work unfolds in a dialogue between nature sounds, instruments and voices from the audience. Burch explores the boundaries of her music by embracing unpredictability and a strong spirit of collaboration, which results in a rich sonic texture. It is music that brings people together. The performance thus becomes a shared experience, in which music and collectivity try to lift all those present to a connected place. Mother Tongue Zanger and percussionist Mola Sylla is in many respects a musical explorer. Born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, he grew up within the tradition of the griots — poets and praisers who pass on stories, often intertwined with theater and dance. That rich tradition of musical storytelling still forms the core of Sylla’s sound. Mother Tongue is the encounter between the drummer Frank Rosaly, the griot singer Mola Sylla, and the improv keyboardist Oscar Jan Hoogland. Each brings a unique instrument and their own cultural background, which gives their joint music a distinct and idiosyncratic sound. De Puerto Ricaanse drummer Frank Rosaly has been active within the improvised and experimental music scene since 2001. He made a name for himself in Chicago, a city with a vibrant improvisation, rock and jazz culture, where he grew into a musical icon. Meanwhile, he lives in Amsterdam and also plays an important musical role there in the improvisation scene. He has already played with various projects in Rataplan, including Mestixz. Oscar Jan Hoogland embodies the buzz of his home city Amsterdam. As an instant composer and instrument inventor, he plays, among other things, a clavichord, a keyboard instrument from the 17th century, which he connects to 220 volts of electricity. As the last student of pianist, composer and improviser Misha Mengelberg, he moves like a tornado through the Amsterdam jazz and improvisation scene.
