Ensemble Céladon, Venetian Devotions

Music history is full of blind spots. Natale Monferrato is one of them. Tijdgenoot van Claudio Monteverdi, successor to Francesco Cavalli at the San Marcobasiliek: Monferrato was by no means an obscure figure, but occupied a central place in the heart of Venetian musical life. Yet his music is still rarely heard in 2026. His motets for alto show what we have missed: concentrated baroque in which devotion and drama constantly stimulate each other. Contratenor Paulin Bündgen and Ensemble Céladon bring this music without frills but with a generous combo of various basso continuo instruments. Furthermore, we will not give you any archaeological metaphors or snappy promotional talk. This is brilliant music – period!
