Every year we lose a gigantic amount of fertile soil due to industrial agriculture: the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO has even warned that by 2050 90% of fertile soil will have disappeared.
In short: we are currently literally pulling the soil out from under our own food system.
The good news: the solution is right there.
In ‘EAT MORE TREES’ — narrated by Maaike Cafmeyer — we take an inspiring journey that shows us how we can simultaneously restore the soil, strengthen biodiversity, and continue to produce food.
Among other things, we visit Spanish farmers Alfonso and Yanniek, who are trying to protect their farm against the encroaching desert in thoroughly dry La Junquera. Their goal: to make the Quipar River flow again.
But also in the Amazon rainforest and with pioneers in ‘agroforestry’ — forest farming, so to speak — in Europe and America, we learn how things can be done differently and better, with food forests that not only produce fruit, nuts, and vegetables, but at the same time regenerate the soil and pull CO2 out of the air — not a win, not a win-win, but a win-win-win.
And proof that agriculture does not have to be opposed to nature, but can rather work together with it.
