Today, it's the Champions League final, and we're going to live it in six hair salons, in Kinshasa, Ouagadougou, Douala, Dakar, Abidjan, and Brussels! For many African and Afro-descendant men, the hair salon is much more than just a place to get a haircut. It's a gathering place, a space of confidence where barbers take on the tunic of sage and where the salon transforms into a confessional. Taboos disappear, and exile, education, girls, religion, football, and politics become as many subjects of discussion at free-flowing conversations. With her rhythmic, funny, and punchy writing, Inua Ellams plunges us into the diversity of African cultures, through countless stories of daily life – from the most common to the most rocambolesque – and poses her enlightened gaze on contemporary black masculinities. Lively, cheerful, and carried by a communicative energy mixing music and lyrical flights, the adaptation of Junior Mthombeni and Michael De Cock celebrates the richness of the African diaspora around the world.
