Haydn composed this work in 1787 for a performance on Goede Vrijdag in Cádiz (Spain). The piece was such an immediate success that he developed it into several versions, including for string quartet, piano, and later as an oratorio with text by Baron Van Swieten. In this performance, the string quartet version is played, interspersed with the recitation of Van Swietens's poetic reflections on each of the Seven Last Words.,
