Ten years after her last quartet release, saxophonist Marjan Van Rompay returns with a new album: ‘On Track’.
Together with bassist Janos Bruneel, also her life partner, she composed new music for a personal record that refers both to her musical path and to her second great passion: long-distance running. 'Running helps me organize things, make space, find balance. Music is an extension of that.'
Marjan is an alto saxophonist with very vocal qualities in her playing style, and the music she writes feels and sounds often like what could be called instrumental singer-songwriting. They are two typical and defining aspects of her musical personality that also indicate that she has always gone her own way in the search for her voice on an instrument that has largely helped determine the sound of the music we call ‘jazz’.
Live, her band does function as a jazz band, with an improvised approach to her songs, and much lyrical input from her rhythm section that supports her singing, warm, and soulful sound in a communicative way.
