Protestzangeres Sophie Straat (1994) experiences a lightning start to her career after graduating from the Art Academy. Her debut EP ‘’T is niet mijn schuld’ wins an Edison. Her first life songs grow via pop hits like ‘Tweede Kamer’ (ft. Goldband) into punk on the new EP ‘Gebroken Spiegels’. Besides her music, Sophie as a multidisciplinary artist also makes artwork, photos, and films, such as the short film ‘Mooier Als Je Lacht’. But whatever genre she sings or brings: the social message is always paramount.
In barely a few years, Sophie Straat thus grows into “the figurehead of the generation of twenty-somethings that is socially involved” (Volkskrant) and her music collects more than fifteen million streams. She also makes a name live, with shows at very diverse festivals, from Oerol Festival on the Wadden Islands to Pukkelpop. But also with sold-out club tours, with as the icing on the cake ‘Sophie Straat’s Protestfest’: an annual celebration of protest and activism in the performing arts in Paradiso, Amsterdam.
Na Pukkelpop and Paradiso may now inaugurate this Dutch phenomenon in the new roof hall of our theater. It will be legendary already.
The press about Sophie Straat:
“Energetic, activist, melodic, warm-blooded, versatile…and inclusive” (NRC)
“Infectious full of activism” (Trouw)
