The Frog King with Pierke van Gent

Two spoiled princesses are given a golden ball by their father to play with. When the ball falls into the pond, Pierke has to get it out. He fishes up all kinds of junk, except for the ball. The younger of the princesses is left behind grieving. Suddenly, a speaking frog appears in front of her. He wants to retrieve the ball if the princess promises to: sit at the same table with him; drink from the same glass; eat from the same small plate and even sleep together in the same small bed! The little princess reluctantly agrees. Promises must be kept, as the proverb says, but this promise has far-reaching, croaking consequences... Koninklijk Poppentoneel Festival is a traditional Ghent puppet theater that offers a regular program between early October and late March. The repertoire consists of dreamy fairy tales, original work, pieces from the rich Ghent puppet theater history, and productions full of suspense and humor. Koninklijk Poppentoneel FESTIVAL conjures a new piece from its puppet attic every time. This attic houses more than 600 puppets, dozens of set pieces and props, all original work and handmade! Pierke van Gent and his friends treat the audience to a portion of unadulterated Ghent tradition. Their antics have stood the test of time and remain surprisingly current. It is actually part of our Cultural heritage! The company is still run by the same family, from father to son, to daughter, to grandchild; the new generation brings a fresh breeze. The permanent theater is located at Moriaanstraat 65 in 9050 Ledeberg, barely 2 streets away from Kerkplein van Ledeberg. It is easily accessible by public transport, bicycle, or car, a 10-minute walk from the parking tower. Performances start at 3:00 PM (doors open at 2:30 PM). The theater puts on a family performance monthly, every Sunday afternoon. A 3-day event for adults is also scheduled annually.
