After a meteor impact, the entire planet was shrouded in dust, so that not a single ray of sunlight could reach the earth anymore. The day the sunlight stopped shining focuses on the end of the dinosaur era. Hard science is supplemented with a sense of longing, humor, absurdity, and melancholy. This documentary asks where the eternal human fascination for the dinosaur comes from and reflects on the unrequited love between human and prehistoric animal. The day the sunlight stopped shining is a collaboration between researcher Cem Berk Şenel of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and directors Maria and Frederik Stuut. Şenel was one of the winners of the Science Pitch at DOCVILLE 2024, a trajectory in which researchers and filmmakers are brought into contact with each other. The winner receives a production budget to develop their pitch into a documentary with a scientific theme, which will be shown at the next festival edition.
