Reed land

Drama, Sven Bresser, 112’, Dutch, 2026 A In Cannes discovery, Rietland—an old reed cutter—becomes obsessed with solving a sinister murder mystery in his local community. According to the leading trade magazine Variety, this Dutch debut announces the arrival of a major new talent. A psychological thriller that grabs you by the throat and deserves comparisons to the series True Detective. One of the surprises at the past edition of Cannes was undoubtedly Rietland. It became the first Dutch film in 27 years selected for the Semaine de la Critique, which aims to reveal new talent. In this feature film debut by director Sven Bresser, a reed cutter finds the lifeless body of a girl on his land. As a grandfather struck by a strange sense of guilt, he sets out to find answers himself within the closed community with unchanging traditions. The quintessential Dutch natural beauty, drenched in an ominous atmosphere and gloomy cinematography, whispers like an indifferent witness. The weathered face of Gerrit Knobbe (a real reed cutter without acting experience) forms a landscape in itself. After the surreal polder thrillers by Borgman director Alex Van Warmerdam, the Netherlands is now also one 'reed thriller' richer. One that builds treacherously slowly only to resonate even longer.
