Our house can have many faces. How do we feel when we are all alone in the rooms we inhabit? Do we feel free to dance exuberantly in the living room, or do we disappear into the quiet corners of our own world.
What emerges behind closed doors, out of the sight of others? Does the room become a place of rest and shelter, or an arena where opposing forces and emotions meet?
ROOM is a solo performance that uncovers the hidden interplay between structure and chaos, in our most intimate place, at home, and in our inner landscapes. Like a fly on the wall, we watch along with a day in the life: the rhythms, rituals, and emotions of the everyday, and the reactions, reflexes, and ways in which we deal with them.
Inspired by movement forms such as parkour and slapstick, performer Matt McCreary develops an entirely unique physical language. His body enters into a conversation with the furniture, the walls, and the unexpected phenomena of the domestic environment on stage.
ROOM is a performance for young and old: playful and profound at the same time. It shows how our true strength lies in the vulnerability with which we connect with our environment and with ourselves, and this in a way that is entirely our own. And how beauty can arise when we let go of control and surrender to what presents itself.
Matt McCreary has been developing a unique physical language for twenty years, in which he places his body in composition and dialogue with public space and the natural landscape.
From diverse sources of inspiration, both inside and outside the world of movement, he investigates themes such as absurdity and simplicity, and directs his gaze to what is subtle and often overlooked.
