Momoko Gill comes to present her acclaimed debut 'Momoko' in the Balzaal van De Vooruit
Momoko Gill has long been one of the best-kept secrets of the British electronic and jazz scene. As a self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and singer, she has left her unique mark on collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi (her musical counterpart in An Alien Called Harmony). By touring extensively behind the drum kit, keyboards, and microphone, she has sharpened her instinct for composition and production.
The debut album 'Momoko' sounds extraordinarily mature for a first record. Throughout, the stylistic influences of jazz musicians as well as singer-songwriters, experimental artists, and electronic producers can be heard, but Gill rejects imitation and shapes her unique sound based on feeling and expression rather than tradition. Gill lives in London and grew up in Japan and the US. She incorporates her broad perspective into her musical ideas and stories, with a unique voice she has developed from her instinct, collaborations, and self-study.
The eleven tracks on the album represent a broad spectrum: the jazz-infused groove of 'No Others' and the harmony-infused, reflective 'Heavy' stand in contrast to the dark, confrontational sound of 'Shadowboxing', which transitions into an eerie, unconventional instrumental beat, 'Test A Small Area', and the impressive 50-piece choir on 'When Palestine Is Free' (featuring greats such as Shabaka Hutchings, Soweto Kinch, Alabaster DePlume, Coby Sey, Marysia Osu, and others). It is a highly personal and poetic recording that showcases the full, uncompromising range of Momoko's vision, presented in her own voice.
