Carroll is a sexually frustrated, misanthropic hammer salesman obsessed with the moral decay of society. Ironically, this salesman steps on a rusty nail, causing his fragile grip on reality to begin to crumble. As his health deteriorates, Carroll wanders through a hostile world in search of romance, severs ties with his friends, and embarks on a desperate crusade for the truth. But when paranoia gives way to violence, he spirals downward toward self-destruction. One question remains: has the world truly turned against him, or is it a tetanus infection consuming his body and mind? The best comparison I can think of for this film is undoubtedly David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch.
