Regisseurs Aitor Arregi and José Mari Goenaga made a tender and emotional portrait of an older homosexual man with 'Maspalomas'. A film that begins scorching hot, but feels refreshing afterwards.
The 76-year-old Vicente has been leading a carefree life for many years as an openly homosexual man in touristic Maspalomas on Gran Canaria. Everything changes when he suffers a stroke and is forced to return to San Sebastián. In the conservative rehabilitation center where he ends up, Vicente finds himself forced to give up everything he has fought so hard for.
A tender, emotional, and intimate character study full of humor and warmth about an older queer character. A film that gives pause for thought about the vulnerability and limitation of acquired rights. Can old age or physical setbacks push you back into the closet? What if you lose not only your independence, but also your identity and freedom to be carefree who you are? Acteur José Ramón Soroiz rightly won the Goya for Beste Hoofdrol for his wonderful performance, which brought to life not only his character's loss and uncertainty, but also the humor, strength, and perseverance of a man facing the hardest journey of his life: his rehabilitation.
Winnaar Goya for best actor.
