bruno Humbeeck Humor to help grow Conference hosted by Bruno Humbeeck Combien of teachers have they not plunged into an immense moment of solitude for having attempted, without preparation, to make their students laugh? How many educators have not felt this ambiguous feeling of wielding a double-edged sword while trying to make a desperate person laugh? How many parents have not tried to tame their child through laughter? What mom hasn’t been tempted to help an infant overcome their pain by making them burst into laughter at the risk of accentuating the baby’s irritation? What dad hasn’t tried to get closer to a too-evasive teenager by reconnecting them to a common humorous heritage, even if it means being sent back without ceremony to his old-fashioned humor? Poorly received jokes, inappropriate gags, or clumsy witticisms sometimes crush more than they lift. The collateral damage of mockery, sarcasm, or irony, these false brothers of humor, are on this point sometimes considerable. For the teacher, for the social worker, or for the parent, laughter and its accomplice humor constitute undeniably precious tools… to be handled with caution. Under its natural false airs, laughter relies on artificial springs. When one must make people laugh to live, to make people live, or simply to help them grow, it is certainly better not to let humor strike at random too much. Holder of a Master Européen de Recherche in Education Sciences and a doctorate in Education Sciences from Université de Rouen, Bruno Humbeeck is active both in the field as a psychopedagogue and as a research director within the Family Sciences service of Université de Mons.
