Don Marsh Quintet - Ianua

Don Marsh Quintet is the acoustic jazz quintet around pianist and composer Wouter Van den Broeck. Met Ianua the band presents its second album, in which development and transformation are central. The title refers to the Latin word for ‘gate’ and to Janus, the Roman god with two faces. Just like that figure, the compositions look simultaneously forward and backward, and they open new musical worlds. Melodies shift and constantly change direction. That search goes hand in hand with the fundamental ingredients of jazz: swing, groove and spontaneous interaction. The quintet unites five strong voices from the Belgian jazz scene. Saxofonist Warre Van de Putte couples a targeted approach with a warm, flexible improvisation style. Matthias De Waele and Janos Bruneel form a rhythm section that sounds both solid and agile, while trumpeter Jean-Paul Estiévenart provides contrast and surprising accents. Drummer Matthias De Waele teaches at the music academy of Herentals.
