A gripping story about love and death, grief and hope
One morning in July 1914 in Jambles, a French village in Burgundy. There is a heatwave. The temperature is also running high at the border with Germany. War is in the air. Let's hope it stays far away, sighs Madeleine.
The lavoir is the meeting place par excellence. Madeleine, Flavie, Marie, Simone, Céline, and Rosalie do not only come there to do the laundry, they also air their troubles and concerns, pour out their hearts, and seek cooling. At first, it is still about everyday things like the vineyard, the grape harvest, the husbands, the young men... Op Saint Jean, the midsummer solstice, the girls eye the boys in search of a flirt or a love. But the boys are mobilized one by one. The women are left behind alone and depend on each other for the grape harvest, wine production, the laundry and washing. We will be back for the vendange, the boys reassure themselves, or at least by Christmas. Unfortunately, the war continues and the postman brings bad news from the front more and more often. Hope gives way to grief and melancholy. The cheerful Marie gets impatient, she yearns very hard for a kiss. What remains of a person and of love after four years of war?
Le Lavoir is the war seen through the eyes of the women on the home front. Their life is hard, the war merciless. But there is always hope... and desire.
