In Being Britney a young woman adopts the pop icon Britney Spears as identity, voice and survival strategy.
Theatermaker Colette Goossens takes the pop icon Britney Spears as a starting point for a solo performance about mental deregulation, language and loss of control. In the confined space of a bathroom, a world unfolds in which hallucination, memory and desire begin to speak through each other.
Being Britney starts from psychosis and the way it is often viewed as a break or endpoint. Goossens is looking for exactly what lies beneath it: its own logic, an inner rhythm, a way of thinking that eludes order. Through text, acting and physicality, she explores how mental vulnerability can take a form on stage that does not explain or fix, but makes palpable what happens when reality begins to shift.
