ARIFA was founded in Amsterdam in 2010 by Turkish-Dutch percussionist Sjahin During. Inspired by the musical traditions of the Silk Road, the ensemble weaves musical traditions from Anatolia, the Zwarte Zeegebied, Persia, and India into its own sound world.
In their music, traditional songs, rhythms, and melodies enter into a dialogue with contemporary arrangements, acoustic instruments, electronics, and improvisation. This creates a sound world in which musical influences from East and West meet and develop further.
Over the years, ARIFA has released seven albums and performed in more than thirty countries spread across five continents. The ensemble has been a guest at renowned venues and festivals, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea Jazz, Southbank Centre in London, the Kennedy Center in Washington, WOMEX, and Jazzahead.
Encounters with musicians from diverse traditions continually lead to new musical exchanges, perspectives, and stories. ARIFA's performances build on existing traditions while remaining open to innovation.
For this Silk Road Dialogues, Iranian singer and oud player Avin Ahmadi joins the quartet. With her expressive voice and strong grounding in the Persian musical tradition, she adds an extra dimension to ARIFA's musical exploration of the Silk Road.
