Double visit 'Le Décor et son Double'

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’, S.M.A.K. and Herbert Foundation are organizing a number of double visits to see both parts of the work 'Le Décor et son Double' by Daniel Buren. With a guide, you will walk from S.M.A.K. to Herbert Foundation, and along the way, you will discover the story of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ with a visit to one of the former locations. S.M.A.K. offers participants an entrance ticket to the museum for the entire day and a return voucher, as well as a selection of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ postcards. Chambres d’Amis, 1986 In 1986, Jan Hoet, then director of the Museum for Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent, now S.M.A.K., organized ‘Chambres d’Amis’. This exhibition presented contemporary art in private homes in various places in Ghent. Daniel Buren was one of the 51 international artists who created a work in situ, in the guest room of the private home of Annick and Anton Herbert. Buren's work, Le Décor et son Double , was, however, conceived as a work in two parts: the artist refused to leave the museum space entirely – as was Hoet's intention – and placed an almost identical reconstruction of the guest room in the public Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent, then still housed in the Museum for Schone Kunsten. After the exhibition, the Herberts kept the intervention in their guest room. To this day, the work is part of the Collectie van Herbert Foundation. The public part of Le Décor et son Double , the ‘duplicate’, was reconstructed in 2011 and included in the S.M.A.K. collection. 40 years of Chambres d’Amis, 2026 On the occasion of the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’ at S.M.A.K., both parts of the work by Daniel Buren, Le Décor et son Double, can be visited again. In conjunction with this, S.M.A.K. and Herbert Foundation are organizing a number of double visits. Participants will be guided by a guide through the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’ at S.M.A.K., in which the public part of Le Décor et son Double is also set up. Via a city walk, they will then walk together towards Herbert Foundation, where they will pay a guided visit to the private part of Buren's work. Along the way, the guide will tell the story of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ with a visit to one of the former locations.
