Laïka Xirriquiteula Teatre Théâtre – Puppets + 4 years Based on a historical episode, Xirriquiteula Teatre composes a visual and sensitive show, accessible to all audiences. Through object theater, puppetry, automata, shadows, and live overhead projection, the company plunges spectators into the Soviet Union of the 1950s. With few elements, but great scenic ingenuity, it brings to life a world that is at once poetic, funny, and heartbreaking. Moscow, 1957. In the middle of the Cold War, while the United States and the Soviet Union are engaged in a frantic race to space, a small stray dog survives in the icy streets of the city. She does not yet know that her destiny will lead her much further than the parks and squares she crosses every night: aboard Sputnik 2, Laïka will become the first living being to be sent into orbit around the Earth. Behind the space adventure, Laïka also tells a story of abuse and sacrifice. The show questions the shadows of progress: how far can we go in the name of science? Does the end justify the means? What do we do with the most fragile when they become the instruments of power struggles? By following the journey of this dog who became, despite herself, a heroine of History, the play evokes as much the wonders of the sky as the injustices of the Earth. Created in 2018, Laïka has become one of the iconic shows of Xirriquiteula Teatre. Adapted into many languages and presented several hundred times in Europe and Asia, it has received numerous distinctions.
