A grandpa is suddenly left behind in a world that slowly changes shape. People come in, people leave again … but who is real? Time and place slip through his fingers and reality also no longer seems to be fixed. Did the lamp just wave? And the carpet sneezed? Yet aai is anything but a gloomy story. In the loneliness of grandpa, there is also something movingly funny and magical. Regisseur Femke Stallaert was inspired by the figures her grandfather with dementia saw in the last years of his life. The result is a moving performance, in which everyday objects come to life and the imagination is given free rein. aai is a gentle and loving ode to the lonely person and to the endless power of his imagination. A tender and playful performance about being alone, about the comfort we find where we least expect it.
