Harry Caul is a surveillance expert from San Francisco who makes a living following and wiretapping people. He is a lonely, obsessive man who lives only for his work. A large company hires him to monitor the conversations of two employees. He is so mesmerized by the conversations that he keeps listening to the tapes over and over again. When he begins to suspect that the employees might be murdered, he finds himself in a crisis of conscience.
Commentaar
The Conversation, the film Coppola made between The Godfather and The Godfather II, dates from the Watergate period, when the Verenigde Staten were shaken by scandals surrounding espionage, wiretapping, intrigues, and abuse of power. This paranoid thriller is therefore not only a great character study, but also a valuable historical document. Gene Hackman is brilliant as the understated gray mouse struggling with his conscience. A lesser-known, but extremely intriguing gem by Francis Ford Coppola.
