A tribute to Nina Simone - Children of Simone (try-out)

What happens when vulnerability and resistance come together? Met Children of Simone brings an all-female collective in a powerful ode to Nina Simone, whose music still touches themes such as freedom, struggle and vulnerability. Seven female singers, under the direction of Emeraude Kabeya, join their voices for a kaleidoscope of emotions: from Simone’s greatest classics to intimate pearls. Spoken word connects her timeless music with today’s social and personal stories. The vocal power is carried by Maura Delbare (keys), Mien Heyvaert (drums) and Caro Abutoh (bass). Together they create a soundscape that is at once sparkling and warm, intimate and monumental. Children of Simone originated from the Leuven Jazz Festival and celebrates young talent and the power of an all-female line-up. Just like in Raphaela Vogels work, opposing forces come together: attraction and repulsion, pleasure and discomfort, vulnerability and resistance. Exactly there the sparks fly. Line-up: Emeraude (Emee.) Kabeya, Joelle Francis, Ines Schokaert, Joetta Wolokollie, Titilayo Oliha, Isha Frateur & Lorena Mello (vocals) • Maura Delbare (keys) • Mien Heyvaert (drums) • Caro Abutoh (bass) In collaboration with Ha Concerts, Flagey, De Casino, Motives For Jazz, Nova Express/art centre nona, 30CC, Rataplan, Muziekcentrum Track and KAAP.
