With the blissfully weird ‘L’ESPÈCE EXPLOSIVE’, we head to northeastern France, where wild boars are ravaging farmers' crops. A problem that is only getting worse, as the beasts seem to grow ever larger and more numerous.
When Wanneer Brun, a grain farmer on the verge of bankruptcy, collapses under the pressure and vanishes without a trace, many questions remain unresolved.
A year after the events, the hot-tempered cop Fulda (delicately played by Alexis Manenti) is assigned the case. His investigation leads him not only on the trail of a possible solution, but also to Stéphane (Ella Rumpf), the gendarmerie's psychologist, with whom he develops a rather, um, close bond…
‘L’ESPÈCE EXPLOSIVE’ is a very strong and funny debut film by Sarah Arnold that wonderfully and effortlessly blends all kinds of very diverse genres: one moment you are in a suspenseful French policier, the next in a blissfully absurd Coen Brothers comedy (think ‘Fargo’ or ‘Burn After Reading’) or in a thriller/mystery – with some social critique poured over top of it.
That might sound like a recipe for a completely rudderless whole, but thanks to her tight direction and delightful acting, Arnold delivers a completely unique film full of suspense and deadpan humor. Sarah Arnold: remember that name!
And we are not alone in that opinion: at Cannes, the film immediately won awards and won the Europa Cinemas label.
