Kristian Matsson grew up in Dalarna, a region in Sweden where Swedes themselves return to find themselves (their history). Think: violin players and folk dancers, wooden cabins and midsummer poles… As a teenager, Matsson resisted this all-consuming culture. He started indie bands, threw himself across the stage like Iggy Pop, and spent his winters snowboarding.
Twenty years and a handful of acclaimed albums later, released as The Tallest Man on Earth, he returned to Dalarna. And to the music he spent years trying to flee: the polskas, the old field recordings, the violin. Just Beyond Endless Mountain (out on October 9 via ANTI-Records) is the result. The record was recorded in his home studio, almost entirely self-mixed, with the vocals run through an old Nagra (for the laymen: a Swiss recorder) for characteristic distortion. It is his most rooted work to date, as someone who finally embraces where he comes from. Naturally, this whole project also gets a live translation, which we already hope will be just as good as the teasers of the record that are already online.
