New Yorker Guy Davis was nominated twice for the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues. He is a musician, actor, author, and songwriter. Guy Davis mixes roots, blues, folk, rap, spoken word, and world music to tell his stories: to address social injustice and touch upon historical events. His theater background is reflected in the lyrical storytelling of songs like God's Gonna Make Things Over about the massacre in Tulsa Race in 1921, Welcome to My World, and Got Your Letter In My Pocket. Songs with a message, therefore, sometimes painful, deep, and real, an earthy contrast to modern commercial music, underlined by soft tones of his guitar or banjo fingerpicking. Davis won the Keeping The Blues Alive Award and was often nominated by The Blues Foundation for Beste Akoestische Album of the Year, Beste Akoestische Artiest of the Year, and Beste Instrumentalist. De New Yorker is the son of the famous actors and activists Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. He grew up in the middle of the black civil rights movement of the 1960s, his father was MC at the ceremony where Martin Luther King delivered his legendary speech, and he could call Pete Seeger a good friend and mentor.
