slavic languages and traveling words: workshop

Sun, 22 Nov 2026 · 11:00–13:00
Passa Porta, Brussels
When the French festival "D'un Pays l'autre" pitches its tents in Brussels, its proposals are bound to be astonishing. In close collaboration with Passa Porta, here it is back with a workshop that invites a change of scenery. What are the traveling words, borrowings, calques or derivatives that have taken up residence in Polish and Serbo-Croatian (and its variations)? Which languages do they come from? How do the target languages welcome them? These questions are all the more fascinating in Brussels, a multilingual city par excellence, because they also touch on a large number of individual trajectories. From there, the workshop will experiment with texts that give space to words or expressions from other geographies. It will be necessary to lean on the unstable, to doubly accept that part of the meaning is stolen from us. But to start translating, one always needs an entryway. To cross the threshold, a collaborative game will loosen up bodies and minds. The workshop will also be punctuated by moments of exchange on the linguistic practices of the group and the languages of the workshop. No prerequisites in translation practice are required to participate in the workshop. Likewise, the workshop does not require any prior knowledge of Polish or Serbo-Croatian. The main language of exchanges will be French, but if you master a language other than French, you can also choose it as your target language: Vietnamese, Spanish or Maroxellois? Anything is possible! About the translators Marie Van Effenterre is a literary translator from English and Serbo-Croatian into French, and an independent researcher in social anthropology. Her practice is articulated between internal spaces (translation, writing) and external spaces (ethnography, workshops). Trained in languages (INALCO), translation (ETL) and social sciences (EHESS), she is a member of several professional associations (ATESS, ATLF) and collectives (Number8, CAFÉ). When she is not on a train, she lives in Roubaix. Cécile Bocianowski is a translator from Polish, an interpreter and a teacher. She has translated poetic prose, theater, novels and short stories, children's literature and essays. Among her recent translations: Hexes by Agnieszka Szpila (Notabilia, 2024), Mères. Un chant pour temps de guerre by Marta Górnicka (Festival d’Avignon, 2024), Séance à la Maison égyptienne by Maryla Szymiczkowa (Agullo, 2024), Nourrir la pierre by Bronka Nowicka (Corti, 2023).
