Is our creative urge inexhaustible? When do we hit its limits? Are the answers that endless innovation provides real solutions or are they fodder for new problems, which lead us into a dead-end street? In times of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and expansionism, Opus apparatus tells a highly topical story about a community of driven people who have to relate to an entity they cannot control. An entity they created by accident and which interacts with them in increasingly layered ways. A theme that Van Severen and Vermeulen also find in the oeuvre of David Bowie. His work was largely inspired by the space race in the sixties (think of alter ego Ziggy Stardust). Not just because of the music: the idea of a prophet who must bring salvation also appeals immensely to the imagination. In addition, Mary Shelley’s literary classic Frankenstein fits seamlessly with the desire for a story about a human creation that takes the upper hand and heralds the downfall. Na The great downhill journey of little Tommy and The only way is UP, Boris Van Severen and Jonas Vermeulen seek each other out again for a third concert theater performance. The elevator pitch of this performance? Ziggy Stardust meets Frankenstein in an energetic theater concert, which also explores the border with visual theater.
