What if women stopped working? In 1975 that actually happened. Nine out of ten Icelandic women went on strike for a day: they did not go to work, did not cook, and did not care for the children. The entire country came to a standstill. That single day transformed Iceland from one of the most conservative countries into a beacon for gender equality. In The Day Iceland stood still, the women themselves tell, for the first time, how they experienced that historic day. With playful animations, archive footage, music by Björk, and a heavy dose of humor, the film brings their revolt back to life.
