Surfer Rosa Begijntje

In Surfer Rosa Begijntje departs Adriaan Van Aken from the novella De zeer schone uren van Juffrouw Symforosa, begijntjen van Felix Timmermans. The small story about a beguine who quietly falls in love with the gardener who comes to prune her grapevine gets a new, contemporary layer. Symforosa feels something growing, but remains silent. Just when she almost dares to express her feelings, the story unexpectedly throws in a different direction. It's all about that moment of doubt: to say or not to say, to do or to linger in what doesn't happen. The performance links that fine, intimate world to the music of Pixies and their album Surfer Rosa. There, silence and noise, softness and explosion constantly collide. That very contrast is also in the performance: small emotions suddenly get large musical outbursts next to them. Over Het nieuwstedelijk Het nieuwstedelijk makes theater that starts from stories and mixes them with music and image. Often personal, often current, and always with an eye for contrast and layering.
