Docfest ✹ Everybody to Kenmure Street

One morning in 2021, British immigration enforcement arrests two Indiase Sikh men in one of Glasgow's most diverse neighborhoods. They have been living there for almost ten years, but are suspected of having an expired visa. Hundreds of local residents immediately take action and form a human barrier around the police van to prevent their departure. One of the protesters, who wishes to remain anonymous and is portrayed in the film by Emma Thompson, even goes to lie under the van. Using mobile phone footage, news clips, and testimonies, Belgian-Chilean director Felipe Bustos Sierra reconstructs this action hour by hour. Everybody to Kenmure Street is an inspiring story about civil disobedience and the power of solidarity. The film won an award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival and is more relevant than ever, as more and more communities worldwide have to deal with harsher immigration policies. together with League for Human Rights --- saturday 21 november - 20h00 Cinema Lumière + Post-screening discussion: Space for democracy Our identity arises not only from ourselves, but also through the people and the society around us. That is why places where everyone can organize freely, safely express an opinion, take action, and participate in public debate are important. That so-called ‘civic space’ is the basis for a strong democracy and for a society in which everyone feels involved. In a post-screening discussion with Yassine Boubout (conflict zone negotiator, police matters expert) and Kati Verstrepen (human rights lawyer, chairman of the League for Human Rights), we delve deeper into the link between that free space and our democracy.
